President Donald Trump has delivered his maiden State of the Union speech to Congress, in which he declared his administration has, since he became President, been ‘building a safe, strong and proud America.’
He also claimed ‘there has never been a better time to start living the American dream.’
The speech lasted for one hour and twenty minutes.
After a fall out between the Republican and Democratic parties over the status of ‘Dreamer’ migrants (undocumented immigrants who came in to the US as children) led to the government shutting down for the first time in 3 years earlier this month, the President ensured in his State of the Union speech that he shall now move to better the relations between himself and the two parties, as well as between the two parties themselves.
‘Tonight I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to protect our citizens, of every background, colour and creed.’
On North Korea, President Trump claimed that Pyongyang is on a ‘reckless pursuit of nuclear missiles [which] could very soon threaten our homeland.
‘We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure to prevent that from happening.’
Some, particularly Democrats, were less enthusiastic of Trump’s capabilities as president.
Indeed, California congresswoman Maxine Waters didn’t even attend the speech, asking ‘why would I take my time to go and sit and listen to a liar?’!
However, as America’s economy is achieving much more than many had expected under Trump, the president has declared the US is entering a ‘new American moment.’
