Mike Pompeo has been confirmed as the new secretary of state by the US Senate, the second since Donald Trump became president in 2016.
The Senate voted 57-42 to confirm the former CIA director as America’s top diplomat.
Most Diplomats voted against Mr. Pompeo, leaving only seven to vote for him.
In light of this, the Senate majority whip, Sen. John Cornyn, said ‘the man has what it takes for the job. That’s why the no votes from our Democratic colleagues rang hollow.’
He added that it was ‘disappointing’ that, in an attempt to ‘lash out at President Trump’, Democrats took a ‘sad break from tradition’ and voted against the appointment.
