The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has joked that Britain would be better off if he, rather than Theresa May, was its prime minister.

Asked about a cabinet meeting which took place on Thursday, Mr. Junker said ‘I am not commenting on the outcome of the Chequers meeting until I know the exact conclusions…

‘I am not a British prime minister, it would be good for Britain if I was.’

EU officials have defended this remark as being ‘good natured’ and nothing but a ‘joke’, though Conservative MP Nigel Evans reportedly responded that ‘I wouldn’t put Juncker in charge of my wine rack.’
