Following criticism of President Donald Trump’s plans for imposing tariffs on certain goods entering the US by EU figures, Nigel Farage has branded those who are condemning the tariffs hypocrites, pointing out the fact the EU imposes similar tariffs on other nations around the world.
President Trump announced last Friday that, as of this week, a global tariff of 25 percent shall be placed on steel, as well as one of 10 percent for aluminium.
Responding to this news, Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, announced that the EU ‘will put tariffs on Harley-Davidson, on bourbon and on blue jeans – Levis,’ all very high-status products imported to Europe from the US.
Former UKIP leader, talking on Fox News Channel’s ‘Fox & Friends’, claimed that this shows the ‘deep hypocrisy’ of the EU:
‘The European Union is a club run by unelected bureaucrats, bullies — and they’re used to getting their own way, and this story at the moment is being portrayed as Trump is the bad guy, the European Union are the good guys. Trump is the protectionist. The European Union are the free traders. It is deep hypocrisy for the EU to be doing this.
‘They have already put tariffs on aluminium and steel. And the fact that Trump does it — so it’s OK for the European Union to do it, but it’s not OK for Trump to do it.’
Indeed, President Trump was elected on promise to put ‘America First’ and, in essence, to put American businesses before all others around the world. The EU, on the other hand, has received no such mandate for itself.
‘So it’s absolutely ridiculous,’ Mr. Farage continued, ‘and if the European Union want to retaliate by putting further tariffs on Tennessee bourbon or Levi’s jeans or Harley Davidsons, they will find a tit-for-tat with German motorcars.
‘I would say to the EU: All that Trump has done are the same things that you yourself has done. Leave it where it is. And if you want to push it, this man will not back down.’
